Boquete Panama

Shots of Boquete Panama

Perched atop the 11,000-feet dormant volcano, if you roll your eyes down and look around, an abundant growth of lush green tropical plants meets with the eyes as far as you can see. In addition to providing food and shelter to a thriving population of birds and animals, the dense vegetation hides a beautiful village along the eastern slopes of Volcan Baru. The panoramic mountain views, pleasant weather, and clean environment are sought after by tourists and foreign residents alike.

The rich volcanic soil perpetuates some of the sweetest oranges and richest coffee in the world. For the locals, coffee is not a commercial crop but a culture that they have identified themselves with for centuries. In fact, the coffee picking season between October and February turns the highlands into a festival zone with colorfully clad Guaymi Indians dotting the slopes.

If you have booked yourself for the coffee estate visits during the harvesting season at a neighboring ecolodge or a village hotel, you may do very well to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s enchanting flower shows. Boquete turns up with bouquets of flowers many of them unseen in the other parts of the world during the coffee harvesting period. Riverside fairs setup during the time, exhibiting the floral heritage of Boquete, attract thousands of people from all around.

If you are an avid bird watcher, a hike up the hill along the cloud forest is highly recommended. You will encounter some of the world’s tallest trees along the way. The breathtaking scenery transforms you into a different world from where you only return to reality at the occasional calls of wild birds. If you want to be one with nature without risking an adventurous hike up the hill, you can take easier trails through the forest towards a nearby spring or a waterfall or simply rent a bike and ride to the outskirts.

After relaxing at hot springs or idling away at fishing ponds, it is time to indulge in some water sports. White water rafting and sea kayaking are among the popular adventure sports in this part of the Chiriqui province. If you want to mix adventure and fun, you could ride on the horseback to the Caldera hot springs and rejuvenate your tired bones.
