Punta Culebra Marine Expedition Center

Overview
In the early 1900's the area that is now the Marine Expedition Center, once served as a harbor for the old Panama City.

During World War II there was a military base stationed there to protect the Panama Canal.  In 1960 the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute founded the Marine Expedition Center.  The main purpose was to encourage conservation of marine life and preserve the ecosystems of both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama.

How to get to Punta Culebra Marine Expedition Center From Panama City

Simply drive from downtown Panama City to the entrance of the Causeway where you can find transportation to the Marine Expedition Center.

What to do in Punta Culebra Marine Expedition Center

The Marine Expedition Center is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Go diving and actually touch the marine life near the coral reef.  See the many varieties of beautiful fish and turtles. Visit local art exhibitions and discover the Path of the Dry Forests.

You can go on short easy going hikes on the trails or watch the ships sail through the Panama Canal from an observation post.  You can also find a gift shop whose proceeds go toward the maintenance of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
